VW Jetta TDI sets Guinness World Record of 58.82 mpg
Posted Sep 30th 2008 12:28PM by Jonathon RamseyFiled under: Sedans/Saloons, Etc., VolkswagenThe VW Jetta TDI has proven to be quite popular in the short time it’s been on sale here in the U.S.: it has put sales of the Tiguan in the cooler and the ones that are available are very hard to get. Now the fairest Jetta of them all has set a Guinness World Record by traversing the lower 48 U.S. states while returning 58.82 mpg thanks to John and Helen Taylor. The Taylors took 20 days to cover the 9,419 miles in a counter clockwise direction, and this wasn’t a hypermiling slow-as-you-can-go affair – they stayed within 5 mph of the speed limit. What’s better than playing a cool car game like Midnight Club: Los Angles while enjoying a great pizza?! Picking up that pizza in a new Saleen Mustang inspired by the game Midnight Club: Los Angles. Rockstar Games and Pizza Hut are teaming up to give away a Saleen S302 Extreme Ford Mustang, worth an estimated $100,000. All you have to do is enter at Pizza Hut’s website before November 10th.

Ok, that last paragraph was a little too much shameless promotion, but the fact remains that it is a cool giveaway.

Has the Revolution Started? Oil Prices Fall Under $94 a Barrel!

Written by auto on Tuesday, September 30th, 2008 in auto.

AUTO CENTRAL – September 30, 2008: News from Perth, Australia in the European and Americas’ early morning hours is that U.S. light crude oil (for November delivery) has fallen another $2.50 per barrel, to $93.87.

The report blames the rejection of the Washington Bailout Plan for the fall. But in light of the fact that a fall in the price of oil is great news, especially when coupled with word that greedy oil speculators may be getting hurt, how could the word blames be used to describe the reason for the fall.

Wouldn’t a more appropriate verb be praises, as in “The report praises the American public for rejecting a bogus plan that law makers tried to force into congressional approval?”

It seems to me that rejecting the bailout plan has already given us a dividend: cheaper gasoline at the pumps.

By Marc J. Rauch
Exec. Vice President/Co-Publisher

Democrats are blaming the Republicans; Republicans are blaming Democrats; and the pretentious experts on the news programs are blaming Americans for speaking up and letting their elected representatives know that they disagree with a plan that is, at best, a wild guess at how to fix the economic problem.

Advances in Material Properties Promote Innovations in European BIW Market

Written by auto on Tuesday, September 30th, 2008 in auto.

LONDON, UK. September 29, 2008 The growth phase of lightweight materials in body-in-white (BIW) has been supported by vehicle manufacturers (VMs) such as Audi, Jaguar, and Toyota, which own 70 per cent of the market and make their BIW vehicle structures in-house. However, the market will witness a slowdown, unless other VMs also join the bandwagon and work with tier 1 product and services companies to integrate their expertise knowledge and overcome the challenge of working with innovative materials. They also need to collaborate on technology development to improve production, achieve cost savings and manufacturing efficiency as well as realise the benefits of a vehicle structure assembly methodology.
